Player Characters

Lucius Cornelius Scipio, main character and veteran of Ilerda.

Scipio is almost the model Roman patrician; handsome, energetic and ambitious (and somewhat ruthless); he believes in Roma and Roman ways and has not much room for Greeks and their ways. Except of course where he can use it to further his own ends, he has studied by the best teachers (his family’s) money could buy.

As the scion of an old and venerated family much is expected of him. He is expected to emulate his predecessors of the Cornelii Scipiones, one of the most famous families of Republican Rome, with numerous military, political and cultural leaders, with emphasis on military. But he has no money and money is to a larger and larger extent necessary for embarking on and maintaining Cursus Honorum.

His mother is a model of a Roman widow, she has no lovers and lives a worthy life.

This is probably why Scipio has chosen to follow Caesar, as this seems the easiest way for a young man of military talent to rise in the world.

Scipio is bright, but not exceptional. And like Caesar, Scipio will use populari means to further his ends, despite being a conservative at heart.

List of friends: Publius Ventidius Bassus, Publius Licinius Crassus.

Speaks Latin and Greek.

Caius Caecilius Rufus

Is a wealthy plebeian of the First Property Class and a long-time friend of Scipio. His family has made their fortune by trading luxury items from the East, and he owns several ships. All the males of his family are of a gentle (for Romans), inquisitive and very bright stock that collects money, knowledge and literature.

They have taken to Greek ways in philosophy and math, and use those ways to earn even more. Rufus is slender and handsome, cultured and gentle, the kind of person who will further others’ careers not his own.

Despite the hardships and danger of army life he has taken somewhat to it as a natural. Not a great tactician, he is more of a strategist, and he has the knack of caring for subordinates.

Back in Rome rumours talk of his mother’s and sisters’ wild life and of a father dying slightly more of disease every day.

Speaks Latin, Greek, and a little Gallic.

Caius Cominius Dolabra

Served in IX Legion since 56 BC and fought Ariovist’s Suebi at Vosges and the campaigns after, earned the Cognomen for using one as a weapon in an emergency during an ambush in Gaul, a Dolabra being an entrenching tool/pickaxe carried by legionnaires. The name somehow suits him, he is large and uneducated, from the lowest Plebeian order, and might even be considered brute. He has a large and good heart though, and is also a kind fellow, with some surprising insights sometimes. Further, he is carefree and always ready for a woman or a drink. In fact the character is based on Titus Pullo of HBO’s Rome and Kalten from Edding’s Sparhawk series. At the battle of Dyrrhachium Dolabra saves Scipio’s life and as the latter is sent to Rome to recuperate after Phasalus, Dolabra comes as his bodyguard and to receive a reward.

Speaks (Plebs) Latin, passable Gallic and can swear in most languages.
